A Snapshot in Time celebrating 40 years of Educate Together

As mentioned in last week’s letter we have a small number of copies of this book. Let us know if you are interested in a copy for your family, once we have all of those interested, we will raffle the books.

Rainbows

We hope to run a programme in September for pupils who have suffered loss through bereavement.

We are delighted to have run 3 successful programmes since we started in January 2022 for pupils who have suffered loss through parental separation.

Rainbows Ireland provides peer group support to children and young people who have been impacted following a bereavement or parental separation or a divorce.

Rainbows provides group support for children of a similar age and loss experience. Meeting others in a similar situation can be very supportive for children and young people.

Rainbows is not a counselling group or professional therapy.

It is a free service.

Information notes for parents and guardians about mandatory attendance reports

Under the Education (Welfare) Act, 2000 schools are obliged to submit a number of reports and notifications that relate to school attendance. Currently schools report/notify the following categories of students to Tusla Education Support Services (TESS).

School Returns: Schools report all student who have been absent 20 days or more by submitting Student Absence Reports (SAR) twice each year.
Annual Attendance Report (AAR). Schools report the total number of days lost through absence by submitting an Annual Attendance Report (AAR) at the end of the academic year.  
Educational Welfare Referrals. Where a school principal has a concern in relation to the school attendance of a pupil and having exhausted in-school interventions an Educational Welfare Referral can be made to TESS in relation to these individual pupils.
Reduced School Day Notifications. Since January 1st, 2022, all students who are on a reduced school day must be notified to TESS.
Expulsions and suspensions. Schools are obliged to notify TESS where there is an intention to expel a pupil and also must notify TESS where the expulsion has been confirmed. Where a student has been suspended for a period of six consecutive days or a cumulative total of 20 school days a notification must be sent to TESS.  These notifications are currently paper based and will be added to the portal in the autumn.

Student Absence Reports (SAR)

Schools are required to submit Student Absence Reports twice each year on those students that have been absent from school for a cumulative total of twenty days or more falling within the following categories:

Illness
Urgent Family Reason
Holiday
Suspended
Other
Unexplained

The school will only make a formal welfare referral there is cause for concern over a student’s attendance, for whatever reason, and in spite of all efforts at resolution made at school level in collaboration with the home.

Annual Attendance Report (AAR)

Each recognised school in the State is obliged to submit a report to Tusla Education Support Services on the levels of attendance at the end of each academic year. Schools are required to provide the following data in the AAR:

 Total number of days lost through student absence in the entire school year.
 Total number of students who were absent for 20 days or more during the school year.
 Total number of students expelled in respect of whom all appeal processes have been exhausted or not availed of during the school year.
 Total number of students who were suspended for any number of days during the school year.

How to record the reason for your child’s absence from school

In the Aladdin App click on Attendance Notes and add reason. There is no requirement to email the school or teacher.

If your child is not present for roll call, they must be marked absent by the teacher. This may be changed to absent and late if the child arrives after roll call, and the teacher then adds in the minutes missed. If your child arrives late but before roll call, they will be marked present but their lateness is also noted in minutes.

When booking holidays it is preferable to book these during school holiday time as loss of school time can have a big impact on a child’s learning in school.

What does the research say about school attendance?

Research tells us that good school attendance has a very positive impact on pupil’s learning and attitude to school.
There are established links between good attendance, student engagement and staying at school to complete the Senior Cycle.
Good school attendance also promotes the development of friendships and peer relationships.
Poor attendance has a negative impact on a student’s educational outcomes and on wider aspects of a student’s life, such as weak peer relationships, risks of engagement in anti-social activity and poor family relationships.
