Dear Parents and Guardians/A Thuismitheoirí agus a Chaomhnóirí,

Hi from Róísín who is at the ET Principal’s Conference in Galway being inspired by all in the ET movement. Luckily no plans to become a pilot, following a crash landing on Tuesday (see below)!

End of year School Tours
The following school tours have been arranged for the classes. You will see an e-payment request on Aladdin for your child’s school tour. This can be paid in full or by instalments if you wish from now until the day before they are due to go on their school tour (minimum instalment is €10).
If you paid a voluntary contribution of €250 in this academic year you will not see an e-payment request on the Aladdin app. The payment of €250 covers the cost of the end of year school tour (where a child is going on two end of year tours, this covers the more expensive tour).

Please contact the school office if you have any queries in relation to this.

Trip to Simtech
On Tuesday, a group of students followed up a trip to the Air Traffic Control with a trip to Simtech where we were greeted by a very kind and experienced flight engineer.
On the tour, we learned all about the physics of flying and the way planes must be built for safe take offs and landing. The key message being that if you want to be a pilot that you must be as inquisitive as possible when you are young. Everyone then got a chance to try out a flight simulator of a Boeing 737 aircraft on a flight from Glasgow coming back into Dublin airport. As seen in the pictures everybody did a great job of soaring through the air.
Definitely a trip to remember and hopefully the start of a great relationship between GETNS and Simtech. Have a look at the video below.  Stephen

Eve’s account of the Trip to Simtech – On Tuesday me, Neil, Thomas, Ethan, Parker and Davin went to Simtech (a pilot simulator). We took the bus which took about 20 minutes. After about 1 minute we realised that we were going the wrong way. We got there at Simtech to meet a man named Bob Sheehan. H was kind, smart and funny. He first brought us to see the simulators which were basically just like the cockpit of a plane on a triangle base with bars holding it up.
We saw the Airbus 320 and the Boeing 737800 (that was the one we went on). But before we could fly a plane we had to learn how to. So, he brought us into a hall to get to a room, like a Conference Room. In the hall we saw pictures of the simulators being made, we learned that it took 250 tons of cement to hold an 11 ton simulator.
Once we got in the meeting room, Bob told us about G Force, LOC, glide slope and how important it is to have an inquisitive mindset, meaning to always be asking questions.
Once we knew how to be a pilot we went to the simulators (Boeing 737800. We took turns to have a go flying, including Róísín. Overall, I had a great time and I’m so grateful I got this opportunity. Eve, 6th Class

Parker’s account of the Trip to Simtech – We were invited to Simtech Aviation by Davin because he is currently intrigued by aviation. He invited us, which was enjoyable because we missed school and we were able to learn more about aviation.

When we arrived the person in charge of the aviation group explained how the simulator works. It’s used to train pilots before flights and recreates the conditions of a plane flight using computer screens and the simulator represents a pilot’s cabin. The simulator is a small, polished metal pod that is modelled after a plane.

How it works is a person sits in a seat in front of a bunch of computer screens and control panels and the computers show a first person view of a pilot’s cabin during take-off, flight, and landing, essentially the simulator creates an illusion of flying a plane.

We all used the simulator and only two of the people with us were unable to land the plane successfully. Thanks, Stephen for a really interesting day out. Parker, 6th Class

6th class have been learning all about World War II this month. The children have done some excellent projects all about the war, or ‘The Emergency’ as it was known in Ireland.
Colm’s class was lucky enough to have some genuine WWII artefacts brought into the class by Tom and Emma.
Included in this were their great grandfather Phillip’s medals. He served in the British army during the war.
They also brought in a travel permit card which belonged to their great grandmother Annie, with details of travel between Ireland and London from 1942 to 1944.

Boy’s 5-a-side competition
8 of the boys from 6th class took part in the FAI 5-a-side competition on Monday at the Clontarf Astro pitches. They played brilliantly throughout, winning their group without conceding a goal and scoring 17 of their own over the 4 games. They were unlucky to lose a close match in the final and can be very proud of how well they did.

5 aside girls team won their FAI blitz and through to the next stage.

Reminder:

  • If your child is unwell or has been sent home because they are not well, please keep them at home for 48hrs and only return to school when better.
  • School closed on Wednesday, 7th May 2025 for staff training
  • When dropping or collecting your child early/late to/from school please ensure you close the pedestrian gate securely on your way in and out of the school.
